In welcoming you to our website, I sincerely wish you enjoy (and gain an insight from) your exploration of the world of PDT – Photodynamic Therapy.

PDT is currently available for skin cancer (non-melanoma), mouth cancer, head and neck cancer, and Barrett's.

Trials are underway for PDT for early lung cancer, prostate cancer, Barrett's (with a new drug) and bile duct cancer.

But PDT could be developed for arterial disease, pancreatic cancer, for liver tumours, vulval and cervical cancer and so many more, if we had the funding to pay for the trials process. It could be in research for brain tumours, MRSA and even vascular tumours and facial deformities.

Without the support of the Department of Health and the NHS, none of these new trials will ever start, and without a change of heart from the NHS and the Primary Care Trusts, so many patients who want PDT now for the approved treatments, won't be able to have them.

On the KILLING Cancer website you'll find all the topline information you'll need about PDT & Photodynamic Therapy. It's a truly amazing treatment that is effective now for a number of cancers … and with your support and backing, it can be developed to deliver so many more cancer treatments in the years to come.

If you are here because you are searching for a treatment for you, or a friend, please CLICK HERE to automatically create an email that will get to the right email address.

We will try to get back to you within a few days – as you will read below, the cancers and conditions where PDT can perhaps have a role include: early stage lung cancer (but not when it has spread far from the point of origin), non melanoma skin cancers, pancreatic cancer, bile duct cancer, prostate cancer, Barrett’s oesophagus (not full oesophageal cancer) and head and neck cancer

Perhaps you are here on the site because you have read of our need to raise funds to fund the development of new treatments. There are several links on the website to the charity where you can email or write to us, while you can also donate from the website via the red DONATE NOW link on the left hand side of this page.

You can download the main prospectus by clicking here.

The website is designed to help you to find a possible PDT treatment that might be suitable for you or a friend.

Barrett's Oesophagus

Barrett's Oesophagus is a pre-cancer in the oesophagus, and the most common treatment is surgery that can be particularly damaging and take months to recover from. We feature a picture here of Malcolm Oliver. His story is in the PDT Patients section. If you or someone you know would like to be considered for this treatment, please do contact us. Email us at patient.killingcancer@virgin.net so we can put you in contact with the people at the UK centres who could offer treatment. There are units in Dundee, Glasgow, Goole, Leeds, Manchester, Liverpool, Sheffield, Derby, Swansea, Gloucester and London.

News

You may read the features in the national media about the treatment of Kim Wuyts, Mike Sharratt, Misha Lynn or Beverley Moy discussing their PDT skin cancer treatments. You might also have read about PDT in the Daily Mail. Some of the case stories are available in the PDT Patients section on the left hand side of the home page.

Skin Cancer and Mouth Cancer

The National Medical Laser Centre at London's University College Hospital has been a pioneer in the development of PDT for skin, mouth and other oral cancers, and if you need a skin cancer treatment, email us at patient.killingcancer@virgin.net and we can direct you to your nearest PDT centre nationwide. There is a treatment with Metvix for 'thinner' skin cancers that is available nationwide, while for deeper lesions we advise an appointment with Colin Hopper and his team at the NMLC for a different treatment. Please have a look at the PDT Patients section featuring the stories of Kim Wuyts and Mike Handley.

Bile Duct and Pancreatic Cancer

KILLING Cancer is heavily involved with funding the new trials of PDT for the bile duct and the pancreas. Both of these exciting new developments require additional funding. If you feel able to help, or know someone who might be suitable to be included on the trials, please email us at patient.killingcancer@virgin.net so we can pass on your details to the medical research teams. We have recently donated £10,000 from funds raised to help to kick-start the pancreatic trial.
Numbers are strictly limited, so you will need to be fast to register.

Prostate Cancer

The new Prostate Cancer trial using the Tookad drug is entering Phase 2. If you know someone who might be suitable to be included on the trials that will be starting in early 2007, please do contact us and email us at patient.killingcancer@virgin.net so we can pass on your details to the medical research teams. Please have a look at the Patient Files account of his treatment from Bill Lee.

Early Lung Cancer

The number of patients being successfully treated for their early stage lung cancer is growing, but we do emphasise that PDT is only being used with patients who have small lesions. Please do contact us and email us at patient.killingcancer@virgin.net so we can pass on your details to the medical research teams.

Louise Longman - Vascular Tumour

Sometimes I am asked why I am so convinced as to the benefit to patients of PDT. The answer is incredibly easy. PDT successfully treated my eldest daughter of her vascular tumour for which there appeared to be no other treatment, other than amputation. Instead, the National Medical Laser Centre developed an adaptation of current PDT science to create a treatment that consumed the tumour totally. Louise is now pain free, and enjoying life again without the threat of amputation hanging over her. Louise is pictured here with charity supporter, Chris Tarrant. Have a look at the PDT Patients section for Louise's story.

Other treatments - Contact Us

PDT is also being used experimentally for several other cancers at the NMLC and at other locations in the UK. If you have a particular question, email us please at: patient.killingcancer@virgin.net. Please put your cancer name enquiry in the subject line. This will help us deal with your enquiry more efficiently and promptly.

School Visits

We have been taking a roadshow into schools during the last summer, talking about the threat offered from sun beds and un-protected sun exposure. If you would like us to visit your school, please email us at schools.killingcancer@virgin.net so we can make arrangements.

Funding PDT research

KILLING Cancer is trying to secure funding for numerous treatment research programmes for PDT. This includes programmes for leukaemia and for the treatment of heavy periods. The medics also need funding to advance their work in the oesophagus. If you would like to discuss your possible donation, please email: killing.cancer@virgin.net. You can make online donations at: Just Giving Website. See the links under DONATE NOW.

Media Enquiries

If members of the media would like to contact the charity to arrange interviews with patients treated, or to contact the media, please email: david.longman1@virgin.net, or phone: 0779 88 33 003.

GPs

If you would like to discuss any issues about PDT and its possible suitability for a patient, please email: gp.killingcancer@virgin.net
